Guests of Residence need to be tracked

It was recently brought to our attention that at a major university in the North East had difficulty tracking the guests of the residence of the dormitories. It was currently done via pen and paper at each facility. There were 13 dorms across campus and logging and tracking all of the visitors was cumbersome and inaccurate. Dock Receiving Processes

The SQBX package tracking system is an enterprise mail and package tracking and delivery management system that supports both workstation and mobile computer receiving capabilities. In other words you can receive inbound mail and shipments using multiple computer workstations or use our mobile handheld computers like the Motorola MC55. Depending on your situation workstations, mobile computers, or a combination of both may fit your needs.

Situation: You Simply Want A Count Of The Packages Dropped By The Carrier

Both our mobile computers and the web-based workstation software have the capability of a quick scan of inbound packages to get a count of the packages unloaded by the carrier. All that's required is a quick scan of the carrier barcode on each package to give you a count of the total packages received. This allows you to verify the number of packages the carrier is having you sign for. Later when time avails itself you can rescan each package and enter the details required for your internal operation.

Situation: Computer Access To Your Receiving Dock Is Not Available

No problem, use our mobile computers to receive packages into your organization. You can enter the same details on the mobile computer that you can with the desktop computer. In fact, multiple mobile computers can receive on the dock. Each user can than take his packages directly out for delivery.

Situation: Your Company Has Detailed Data Requirements To Track Inbound Packages

In this case it may work better for you to enter receipts into the workstation. Obviously a computer workstation has a much larger monitor and usually a full size keyboard for entering data. Entering large amounts of package receipt data into a mobile device slightly larger than a cell phone may get tedious.

Situation: You Require Internal Routing Information To Be Attached To The Package

Typically this requires using the computer workstation with an attached label printer. However, this will soon be available on our mobile computers as well.

Speed vs Mobility

A computer workstation has a lot more horsepower than the processor on a mobile computer and therefore is a lot faster when receiving packages and conducting research on your receipts and deliveries. However, sometimes the mobility of the handheld computer is so convenient that using it for receiving outweighs the speed of the desktop. This is certainly the case during the delivery process. It's unlikely you're going to be satisfied lugging your desktop computer around your mail route to capture the recipients signature.

Choosing the Right Hand Held Device for your Application

With all the hand held devices available for inbound tracking, it can get pretty confusing choosing the most appropriate device to best meet your needs. There a few basic questions that you must answer. It is important to lease or purchase the right model because certain features cannot be changed later on. For example if your inbound tracking process requires taking a picture of damaged packages then you need to get that feature initially with your device, because it can not be added later on. For example, when using mobile computers in an inbound tracking process ask yourself the following questions:

Do I need or want cellular capability on my device?
With SQBX Inbound Tracking Software it's not required because data can be synced only when needed. But if you're going to use SQBX for external delivery routes and fleet management or if the device needs to have real-time capability outside of your building, you're going to need this option.
What carrier will I be using with my device? Hand held devices only work with certain carriers.
If you do choose cellular capability with your mobile computer be mindful of the carrier to hardware relationship. I'm sure you're aware that Verizon phones do not work on T-Mobile networks and the converse is also true.
Do I need a camera in my device?
Handy if you want to document the delivery process with photos...for example damaged packages.
Will I be scanning one or two dimensional bar-codes?
The Motorola MC55 offers 1D scanning (UPS labels) or 2D scanning (FedEx labels). The FedEx 2D barcode has additional information embedded in it. Of course there is a 1D barcode on the FedEx label as well.
What environment will I be using my device? Warehouse, Mail room, Office, etc.
This question can help determine how rugged your device should be.
Will I need Wi-Fi capability?
If cellular connectivity is not required the device must be docked in a cradle to exchange information. All Motorola MC55 and MC70s have wireless networking capability which may allow you to exchange data via the wireless network instead of having to dock the device in the cradle.
How long is the battery life needed for your task.
A single battery can provide 3-5 hours of usage. If you'll be using the device in the field longer than this consider a 1.5 or 2 times battery size.
